R & R Trucking, Inc. Attends Women in Trucking Accelerate Conference & Expo

Women Supporting Women

JOPLIN, Mo. November 9, 2017

R & R Trucking, Inc. attended this year’s Women in Trucking Accelerate Conference & Expo, held Nov. 6-8, in Kansas City, Mo. The national conference attracted over 500 attendees from across the U.S.

The Women in Trucking Association (WIT), is a non-profit organization with the mission to encourage the employment of women in the trucking industry, promote their accomplishments, and minimize obstacles faced by women in the trucking industry.

Vonda Cooper, Chief Operating Officer for R & R, said the goal for the company in becoming a WIT sponsor is to help support all women in trucking and to further expand the message that R & R is a great place for professional women truck drivers to work. “It is an amazing conference,” said Cooper. “Women supporting women in a male dominated industry is always exciting.”

One of the highlights of the conference was the Freightliner and WIT presentation of the seventh annual influential Women in Trucking Award to Daphne Jefferson, Deputy Administrator, U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

The Influential Woman in Trucking Award recognizes women in the trucking industry who make or influence key decisions, have a proven record of responsibility, and mentor and serve as a role model to other women. The award was developed in 2010 as a way to honor female leaders in trucking, and to attract and advance women within the industry.

According to Ellen Voie, President and CEO of WIT, women make up 7 percent of over-the-road truck drivers. The organization plans to release a best practices guide for trucking companies to follow in an effort to attract more women into the field of trucking driving. “We can all raise the level of the women participating as professional drivers,” said Voie.

“We are proud to say our company far exceeds the industry norm when it comes to hiring professional women truck drivers,” Cooper said. “Today, almost sixty percent of R & R’s driving force is women.”
